2 Videos/Articles: How teachers are using these tools

1. Tiverton Middle School group Skypes with authors to hear the stories' stories (http://www.heraldnews.com/x1631894112/Tiverton-Middle-School-group-Skypes-with-authors-to-hear-the-stories-stories)

Tiverton Middle School recently received a grant for a 55-inch TV and signed up for Skype as a whole school. They know focus on one book a month and then have skyped talks with the author of that book. They feel blessed to get the chance to "meet" someone who wrote the book they read and talk to them on a personal level.

2.Digital Wish Opens Virtual Volunteer Site To Match Teachers with Experts (http://thejournal.com/articles/2012/10/11/digital-wish-opens-virtual-volunteer-site-to-match-teachers-with-experts.aspx?admgarea=News1)
Teachers are now able to request specific online wishes to professionals in that area. They post what their wish or lesson they wish to teach is on the site and then a volunteer who is knowledgeable about that topic will serve via conference on that topic. They assist them in creating the project and constructing it with their class.

Sample Skype:

Lastnight (10/8/14) I Skyped with my brother, sister-in-law, and nephew who live in a town near Sparta, WI. We see them about once a month which is not enough, so skype helps us talk and "see" them between visits.

Lessons from Skype in the Classroom:

1. Road Trip! 50 States in 36 Weeks!
This lesson uses skype in the classroom and the class has the hopes of visiting classrooms in each of the 50 states. This allows students to talk and interact with other students around the country. When I was in elementary and middle school I always enjoyed units about the states because it was interesting to learn about different parts of the world. I would have loved to use skype to see other students around the states and even the globe to learn more about other cultures.

2. Amazing Animal Adaptations
This lesson is all about animals and their habitats in which they live in. The lesson focuses on where different animals live and how they adapt to that environment based on seasons and changes. The students begin the lesson by researching an animal that lives in their region and what type of habitat they live in and then draw a picture of this animal and where it lives. After the skype presentation of Yellowstone Ecosystems and museum exhibits, the students will then compare those animals to they animals that live in their own region. This lesson interested me because the students are able to experience learning about animals right in the classroom and even get to see different parts of the world and what animals live their. They become knowledgeable about how animals adapt to changes in the seasons.

Thoughts/Student Uses:
Skype in the Classroom is probably one of the most interesting websites/tools I have yet to see that is useful in the classroom. As a teacher, this tool brings in a whole new dimension of learning in a way that students get to engage with much more than what is available in the classroom. Interaction between other students and teachers around the world is an incredible learning tool to share knowledge with other people. Students can do an endless amount of projects with this tool and it will connect them with people around the world.
